Post intensive care syndrome - from risk at ICU admission to 3 months follow-up clinic
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods We invite patients that stayed in the ICU for more than 2 days to the follow-up clinic at 3 months. Before that, we evaluate them at ICU admission for risk assessment, at ICU discharge for PICS components and in hospital’s first week and hospital’s discharge to monitor the PICS evolution. Data from our Follow-Up Clinic and registry was prospectively collected from January 2013 to February 2015 and includes demographics, SAPS II, duration of sedation, duration of mechanical ventilation or ICU stay and also PICS risk and components. To evaluate the psychological components of PICS “Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale” and “Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome 14 Questions Inventory” were applied to patients during hospital stay and at 3 months. We compared patients with PICS at ICU discharge with no PICS population. A p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Late HIV diagnosis is a major risk factor for intensive care unit admission in HIV-positive patients: a single centre observational cohort study
BACKGROUND HIV positive patients are at risk of infectious and non-infectious complications that may necessitate intensive care unit (ICU) admission. While the characteristics of patients requiring ICU admission have been described previously, these studies did not include information on the denominator population from which these cases arose. METHODS We conducted an observational cohort stud...

BACKGROUND A majority of patients survive their episode of critical illness but up to 30% of patients suffer from psychological problems such as post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression in the year after intensive care unit (ICU) stay. A method to identify discharged patients at risk for adverse psychological outcome would be helpful in the triage for ICU follow-up and could enable early i...

Over the last 15 years the management of patients admitted in the ICU has changed dramatically. A growing number of well designed randomized controlled studies have been published, resulting in improved medical care and reduction of short-term morbidity and mortality. Despite these important achievements, little attention has been placed on the long-term complications of subjects discharged fr...

The critical care literature in the US has recently brought attention to the impact an ICU experience can have long after the patient survives critical illness, particularly if delirium was present. Current recommendations to mitigate post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) are embedded in patient and family-centered care and aim to promote family presence in the ICU, provide support for decision-m...

Ariel M Modrykamien has provided an excellent review of the long-term consequences of treatment in the ICU and the importance of developing ICU clinics to provide comprehensive care to ICU survivors.1 The long-term outcomes of post-ICU admission include reductions in quality of life, lung function, and nutritional status, and impacts on psychological outcomes and cognition. Patients and their c...
